Touch Screen Technology - History

Using a touchscreen increasingly becomes a natural behavior as we automatically assume that we can swipe any display screen. But do you know, when was the first touch screen invented?

Currently, when we think of touch screens, we are obliged to consider the consumer products like smartphones and tablets. These products are widely available around the world with different specifications and features.

Touchscreen technology has been around us for more than a decade. We have started swiping every screen from a long time. This technology has been beginning in the music industry when touch sensitive synthesizers were developed as said by technology historians. Hugh Le Caine came up with the Electronic Sackbut in 1948 which is a device that required a piano keyboard and control board. The player uses touch to control the volume by putting pressure on the keys, and can even change the music's texture options through the control board.

Touchscreen technology was first combined with computer technology in the 1960s as nothing has happened for a couple of decades.
1960's – Innovation of Capacitive Touch Screen Technology
E.A. Johnson has discovered the benefits of touchscreen technology and invented the first finger-driven touchscreen. He wrote an article called - 'Touch display - a novel input/output device for computers.' The capacitive touch screen technology is being in use today in ATM and kiosk applications.

1970's - Resistive Touch Screen Technology
Dr. G. Samuel Hurst invents resistive touchscreen technology that quickly outshone its predecessor. He invented this type of touchscreen technology by accident during a scientific experiment. Then he placed it over a computer monitor, and today these touch screen monitors are the cheapest of its kind and widely used in restaurants and factories around the world.

1980's - First Commercial Use
Hewlett-Packard commercialized the first touch screen by launching the HP-150, which is being used more frequently and in more diverse applications in the early 1980's. The University of Toronto then took a great step in the development of touchscreen technology and discovered multi-touch. They invented the first human-controlled multi-touch device in 1982. It was a touch screen that could detect multiple touch points.

1990's - First Touch Phone
IBM and BellSouth came up with the first phone with a touchscreen interface called ‘the Simon Personal Computer’ in 1993. Apple has followed their version of touchscreen telephony with the Newton touch sensitive PDA.

2000's - Other Touch Screen Technologies
Multiple companies started to use touch screen monitors in the 2000’s. Surface Acoustic Wave, Infra-Red and Projected Capactive touch screens were invented in this year while carrying their benefits and limitations. These technologies have a significant impact on the gadgets we use.
